Lisa Byers’ QOV Sew-In

The Quilts of Valor Foundation’s Sew-In Day was a great success today up in Trinity, FL!  The facility where we met was great and we had lots of room – a special Thank-You to the Champion’s Club for allowing us to use their meeting room for this event.

Lisa supplied great fabrics and had many pre-cut and pre-marked for 1/2 square triangle sewing right off the bat.  She did a great job preparing - lots of work involved there!  The pattern was a Carpenter's Star design that Lisa modified to use center panels that she had gotten from Northcott and an on-line source (flags, eagles, etc).

Unfortunately, your webmaster fell down on the job taking pictures, because she was having fun sewing, but here are two of the finished tops (before ironing):

The group actually finished 4 complete tops and a 1/2 top that Lisa will finish - Lisa intends to quilt them.  This link might work to take you to the QOVF Facebook page for the first one that Marilyn posted:  https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=802493583098734&set=gm.10151938503968716&type=1

The ladies attending came from various locales and with varied backgrounds – some QOV related, some not.  Several of the attendees had sons/relatives in Afghanistan.   Mary S., Jadene and I were there from the CT Quilters (Mary is a good friend of Lisa's and helped her prepare – thank you, too, Mary!).  Several said they heard about it from the Feather Princess’ Guild (they allowed Lisa to use their email list).  Several heard from the post Lisa made to the QOVF Facebook page.  Marilyn came all of the way from Clermont since she couldn't find anything going on in the Orlando area.  She is active in a QOV group in Connecticut and was a big help to Lisa during the Sew-In in keeping people productive (thank you, too, Marilyn!).

We expect that this is now going to be an annual event for the Quilts of Valor Foundation, so go ahead and Save the Date for the first Saturday in February in 2015!

Quilts of Valor National Sew Day – Feb 1st

Lisa Byers is sponsoring a
Tampa Bay Area Sew-In
For QUILTS OF VALOR
And YOU are invited!
Location:  Trinity, FL
Date:  SATURDAY, Feb 1st
Time:  11:00 – 4:00 pm

Patterns, and fabrics will be provided. However, if you have red, white/tan, blue and or gold Quilt Shop quality fabrics that you wish to donate to QOV, please bring them. Since these quilts are being sent to those combat veterans that have risked their lives for our country, we want only the best quality fabrics to go into their quilts. Lisa has volunteered to longarm the tops that are finished, if you wish. You will have the opportunity to designate a recipient for your quilt or you may generously donate to a veteran in need which QOVF will take care of for us.

Coffee, tea and snacks will also be provided. The Fox Hollow Restaurant is right next door to the Champions Club clubhouse (see details below) and they have full meals at extremely reasonable prices if you wish to have a full meal at any time before, during or after the sew-in.

Please bring your sewing machine in good working order, with neutral color thread (such as medium gray or khaki) and full bobbins. General sewing supplies and rotary cutter and ruler if you can. Lisa has cutting mats and she will pre-cut fabrics but some trimming and border cutting may be necessary. Travel irons and ironing mats may also be helpful if it is not too much trouble. Ott lights and extension cords are also good to pack.

If you would like to sew and you do not have a machine to bring, please contact Lisa at the email below as she may be able to provide one for the day.  Also, if you would like to help but you are not a confident stitcher, you may help by cutting chain sewn pieces apart and pressing for us. So please join in. And you can learn to stitch!!!  So take advantage of the opportunity to get some free instructions.

Please R.S.V.P. for this event directly to Lisa at mommasaidsew.lisa@gmail.com
If you would like to bring a sewing friend, please feel free, as this is open to all adults. You may also forward this email to anyone you know that may be interested in participating. Children are, unfortunately, not invited to attend this event, unless they are already sewing on their own.

Quilts of Valor has asked that those who participate register in order to have their names in a drawing for a JANOME ARTISTIC AQ18dx MIDARM QUILTING MACHINE PLUS LIBERTY FRAME!  To register with QOV for the Janome, please click here for details: http://www.qovf.org/content/qov-national-sew-day-2014.html

Details for location of the QOV Sew-In:
The Clubhouse meeting room has been reserved in a development called Champions Club.  The address is 10132 Robert Trent Jones Pkwy, Trinity, FL 34655.  Click on this link for a Google map to the Clubhouse.

This is a gated community. When you arrive at the gate, follow the instructions on the keypad and the gate will open for you. In the event of rain that day, the gates will remain open so you don't get wet!

There is a covered portico at the entrance to the clubhouse and two kind husbands have volunteered to assist quilters with unloading sewing machines and supplies. So pull right up to the door and let them give you a hand.

New FL QOV Coordinator

Meet Linda Fentriss, Florida State Coordinator

I live in Tampa, Florida with my husband Richard and our dog Tillie.  My husband and I met when we were stationed at NAF Andrews Air Force Base.  I was an Air Traffic Controllman and he was an Aviation Electronics Technician.  I got out of the Navy and he made it a career and retired after 21 years of service.  I had been a teacher, an administrative assistant, computer programmer and adjunct mathematics professor before retiring this year.  Now I am a quilter.

My sister-in-law convinced me to learn how to quilt.  I wanted to do something with the quilts and looked on line to see what charitable organizations needed quilts.  I found the QOV site and contacted our local quilt store, Crafty Threads, and asked what did I need to do.  When they said just show up and help, I knew I found a winner.  I have made many quilts from start to finish and am teaching myself how to longarm quilt.

With our QOV group I do a little of everything.  I have only been a member for one year but have cut, pieced and quilted a QOV from start to finish.  Being involved with the military for all of my adult life, I feel like I need to give back to those who protect my freedom.  When I read in the newsletter that QOV needed help, I  volunteered to do longarm quilting; then I volunteered to be the Florida Coordinator.  I look forward to supporting QOV as I believe every service person past and present deserves a quilt of valor.

You can contact me by e-mail at Linda.Fentriss@qovf.org.  I look forward to hearing and working with you.

From the Quilts of Valor Foundation

Quilts of Valor Foundation
2013

To the Quilts of Valor Community of Volunteers,

We need your help! The QOVF story on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams Monday evening has brought impressive national attention, new Facebook friends, website visitors,
interested volunteers, many new groups registered AND over 251 requests for Quilts of Valor since the broadcast.

Each month we have standing requests for over 240 quilts from medical facilities in Afghanistan and Germany, as well as stateside programs working with both active military and veterans. With the additional 251 requests, we are short of Quilts of Valor needed for presentations in the next couple of months. If you have a quilt under way, please get it finished and get it to your State Coordinator or to our Destinations Coordinator. If you have not started your next Quilt of Valor, would you try to get another one completed and to the long armer before the holiday season is upon us?

Here a just a few of the comments that we have received with the requests for our comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.

--This request is for my dad. He has Type 2 Diabetes from Agent Orange, and has been sick for several months. Out of six boys in his family five of them served in the military. Thank you for all that you ladies are doing.

--My father served in the 93rd evac hospital in Saigon (1964-1965). He is an anesthetist (RN) and spent day after day in the operating room helping patch up the injured men. He's never received any kind of honor or award for his service. This would be the perfect recognition.

--Yvonne was an Army surgical nurse stationed in harm's way in each deployment. Severely wounded In January 2010 by a
mortar that blew up outside her tent, she has been struggling to recover from nerve damage, TBI, and PTSD. She deserves a Quilt of Valor more than anyone I know. Please consider her as a recipient.

--My husband was severely injured while serving in Vietnam. He still has his Purple Heart, tattered as it is, hanging from his rear view mirror. When he saw the news about your quilts, he commented, "I would love to have one." This is the first thing he has asked for in 43 years.

--Spent 8 months in Afghanistan last year working as aircrew. Will be deploying again in a few months during the winter. Having a quilt from you would be an honor. If it's not I understand. My roommate had a quilt that had been given to him through QOVF and has had me interested ever since.

--I was wounded on Nov.5, 1969. After several weeks of surgery in Vietnam and Japan, I recuperated enough to be shipped back to the U.S.A. I arrived at St. Albans Naval Hospital in New York on a freezing winter day. We were transferred to an unheated school bus dressed only in our hospital pajamas and a thin robe. I could have used one of your quilts to ease my shivering as we rode for an hour before arriving at he hospital. Tears came to my eyes when I heard about Quilts of Valor on the nightly news.

Thank you so much for showing our troops someone cares.

Thank you for all you have done and thank you in advance for helping us honor these men and women who have given so much for us.

Susan Gordon, Executive Director

Regional Coordinator Profile

I thought you’d like to know a little bit about the people who “grease the wheels” behind the scenes for the Quilts of Valor Foundation.  These volunteers are the lifeblood of the group and provide invaluable assistance to QOV groups in their Regions.  The profile we feature this post is of Betsy Morris, a Region 8 Coordinator.  Region 8 covers AL, FL, GA, NC, SC and TN.

My name is Betsy Morris. I am honored to be the Regional Coordinator for North Florida.  I live in the very center of the state, in a very small, rural community called Clay Sink, which was pioneered and settled by my father’s family in the mid 1800’s.  Our “hometown” was Dade City, about 35 miles north of Tampa, where we shopped and attended school.

My paternal grandmother was a quilter and I am blessed to have one of her quilts.  My mother, who is still with us at 97, is a sewer, not so much a quilter, but a wonderful sewer and loves to piece the quilt tops.  She made our clothes when we were small and as she got older began making quilts for all the family I have always had a love for textiles and for quilts.  I do sew and quilt, however, my quilts would probably be judged as folk art rather than fine art.  It is the process that is as comforting as the end product, for me.

I am a realtor by profession, a part owner of our company, and these days are both very exciting and trying at times in this arena.  I came across the Quilts of Valor program when it aired on the local PBS station and it really spoke to me.  Couldn’t get it out of my mind.  I sent an email asking how to get involved, and here I am.  Quilts of Valor program has impressed me in many ways, but, I think most in that there are so many hands, from beginning to end, from so many different parts of the country, who come together, some never having known each other before, to create a beautiful quilt to send to a soldier they never met.  What a generous spirit.  I am preparing to make my first presentation on Veteran’s Day.  I can’t think of anything more appropriate.

In my personal life, I am wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, niece, closely involved with a huge family.  My husband and children are so impressed with the Quilts of Valor Foundation and think it is a wonderful way to show appreciation to our soldiers.  How could I not participate in such an honorable tribute to the men and women who make this life possible for us?  Our families have been touched by wars over the years, as have many.  We have been blessed to have soldiers return home safely from wars, some bearing scars, both visible and unseen, some with medals of valor that we never knew about, and, we’ve lost some in battles, never to return.  Sadly, our family is not unique in that service or sacrifice.  Quilts of Valor gives us the opportunity, in whatever venue, to share our love and support, not only for the soldier but for our country.
